For a few years I had been aware of the Texas trio Tre Orsi and had enjoyed the music they had passed my way, starting with their cover of Silkworm’s “Insomnia” on the SKWM tribute double disc “An Idiot To Not Appreciate Your Time.”

A copy of their then-forthcoming debut record “Devices + Emblems” had been sitting on my hard drive for a couple months.

I’d listened to it.

I’d been fond of it.

Like many of the good albums by good bands sent my way, I wished it would find a worthy home.

Then, two things happened.

1. I heard their song “The Engineer” (streaming above), which is also on the Matador Records regional compilation “Casual Victim Pile,” played on the radio while driving home one evening and I could not shake it from my head. Right here! Boston! Stateside!

2. On a different drive a month later, this directly into a snowicane heading from central New Jersey to Ithaca, New York, I decided to revisit “Devices + Emblems” in its entirely.

What I found was that this record was more than just “The Engineer” – as smart as I had hoped and as memorable as any it might stand side by side with on the Comedy Minus One roster. The last thing I wanted was this record to go overlooked.

As soon as I found my destination, I kicked the snow off my boots, set up my laptop and sent the band a somewhat breathless email seeing if anyone was helping them with a digital version of this about-to-be-released album.

The band did not shun my awkward advances and Comedy Minus One will release this record digitally June 8, 2010.

Produced by Bubba Kadane of The New Year and Bedhead, this edition of “Devices + Emblems” includes both songs from the band’s first single “no. 7” as bonus tracks.

A limited run of hand-assembled vinyl copies of “Devices + Emblems” will be available in the Comedy Minus One store shortly.

In the meantime, ogle this appropriate quote from Dusted:

“Safely in the Sonic Youth/Unwound school of triumphant, open-chorded noise rock, to the perfect, head-nodding level of abstraction.. Regionalism dictates that a band like this should exist, and I’d like to hear more by them.”
